You will please excuse the lack of posting around here recently.  As I mentioned in my last post, I have begun my semi-annual housesitting at the home of my friends S and T and have spent most of my time in the following manner:

Wednesday, March 20, 2013

So I left my place to begin a housesitting stint this week with nothing more than a pillowcase filled with a random array of clothing (we're talking very random).  Somehow I managed to pull together this outfit from the selection at hand and it proved to be a major hit at work with both customers and coworkers.

I just came across a hidden haul of old T-shirts while cleaning out the closet of my old bedroom this week.  Almost all of them are oversized indie band T-shirts that will probably never be worn by me again, but this yellow shirt was something worth a second look.

St Patrick's Day

St Patrick's day always poses a bit of a conundrum for me.  On the one hand, as far as I can tell, the wearing of green on March 17 is pretty much an American thing.  I have spent at least two St Patrick's days in Ireland at this point and I must say, one sees more green during a Ireland football match.  On the other hand, since Mr. B hails from the Emerald Isle, I do like to like to give a passing nod to the holiday.  Here is this year's compromise - above is what I wore out, below is my tiny bit of Irish pride.

I shot this right after painting my nail hence the cuticles which have not yet been cleaned up.  Not many people have noticed this one nail and those that have thought it was the Mexican flag - appropriate I suppose since I'm Mexican American and not in the least Irish.

Remember several years ago when I set myself a little sewing challenge? Probably not.  At any rate, I came oh so close to finishing the required number of garments in the alloted amount of time, but not quite.  Anyway, I realized that when I finally did finish the last piece (about a year ago), I never bothered to photograph it.  So here it is.  I also devoted a bit of time this week to hemming these trousers which were favorites of mine in high school, but had since become quite shabby around the edges.  They're still a bit too big for me and I was forced to make a quick trip to UO before work to pick up a belt lest I spend my shift clutching the waistband.

Here we have the dressed down, before work version where I have folded over the waistband thus avoiding the necessity of a belt.

Remember yesterday when I said that my camera died before I was able to fashion an infinity scarf from my sweater?  Well here's what I was attempting to pull off.  I bought this sweater last year when, by the end of my work day, I was so freezing I purchased the cheapest covering I could lay my hands on.  It wasn't something I would have picked under normal circumstances (I didn't really think it was my style), but I am so glad I did as it is a really versatile piece.  I can tie it into all sorts of configurations, which you know I love to experiment with, and it makes a better scarf than most anything else I own (and that includes actual scarves).  The dress was an online purchase I picked up somewhat recently as it had been marked down to a ridiculously cheap price and it looked cute on the model.  I'm trying to break myself of that unfortunate habit many of us have of not looking beyond a cheap price tag and I must say for the most part I have conquered the affliction.  I probably should have passed on this dress as, again, it is not really my style, but it does make me feel incredibly slinky and I guess that's a good thing.

"off-duty model"

This outfit came about whilst chatting with Mr. B.  I believe he was commenting on my recent penchant for the baggy trousers look and I told him that today I was back in my skinny jeans and thrifted snoopy T.  "Ah, the 'off-duty model' look" was his reply and thus followed a discussion on the concept of said look which we decided consists of skinny jeans, old T-shirt, great (but possibly outrageous) shoes, messy up-do, and large scarf.  I thought maybe giant sunglasses and some ethnic jewelry might round out the look.  I promised him that I was going to rock my best off-duty model look for the rest of the day and here you have it.  Unfortunately the camera battery died before I was able to turn my sweater here into a convincing infinity scarf which I think really completed the look (also my jeans could stand to be a bit tighter and more distressed).

I'm loving these colours together, but in an ideal world where one doesn't stand on one's feet for eight plus hours, I would be wearing a different pair of shoes.

Tonight I learned firsthand how very hard it is to photograph your own hands without the use of a tripod or other such device.
Here I have attempted to hold the camera between my chin and collarbone with questionable results.

And here, I have resorted to good old Photobooth.

Anyway, I just wanted to show off my rings because it is a bit of a departure for me to wear more than one at a time.  The largest one is my latest purchase from FP.  The tiny pinky ring next to it I got in high school (I can't remember where exactly, but I want to say it was some sort of street fair stall or something similar).  The smaller turquoise ring is a long time favorite which I actually lost after wearing and posting it on this blog four years ago.  As so often happens I put it in my coat pocket to wash my hands and then didn't wear the coat again for a few years.  The last ring I found on the street in Silverlake a couple of years back.
Yes, my hands are not the most beautiful or feminine in the world, but they can create all sorts of wonderful things which to me is infinitely more important and for that I love them.

I forgot to snap a shot of today's outfit before changing into my yoga gear (just the pants, the top is the same) and y'know what? I actually think this outfit is more fun than the one I wore in public.  It's certainly a bit crazier what with the stripe down the leg, the red socks and gold house slippers.

penguins

As you can see, I've become quite enamoured of these animal print tops we've been selling lately.  Tonight I had the odd pleasure of ringing up a girl who was wearing this exact shirt, to the delight of my coworker ("It's like a mirror image!!").  It actually wasn't, as she had styled hers with a black skirt and buttoned it up completely.

Again, this romper is denim (well denim chambray to be more accurate), but I'm definitely not wearing jeans here . . . and thus concludes "jeans free week" 2013.

Tuesday, March 5, 2013

Okay, so I am wearing denim here, but you can't really call these jeans.  They're more like denim culottes.  Since I have been on the whole "borrowing from the boys" trip of late, I thought I'd give this outfit a go, only to have my aunt tell me "you look like a boyscout".

jeans free week continues . . .

More leggings and a dress I picked up from Spitalfields market.  I can't decided whether I like the boots with this outfit or not, but right now they are one of the only pair of shoes I can wear for an 8 hour shift and not feel like killing someone at the end of it.

The colour on this picture is off as I forgot to switch my camera back to a daylight setting.  Oh well, I happen to like this picture better than the one with the correct setting.  It gives the sweater a nice dusky colour, when in reality it is a vivid turquoise.

I pulled this vintage bed jacket out of the mending pile thinking I would fix it up for use.  Turns out, I had already fixed it and it just been languishing there for lord knows how long.  Mr. K and I were discussing recently how I do not generally wear purple.  For a long time I didn't wear ANY purple as, in my mind at least, it connotes fantasy fiction, renaissance faires and a whole aesthetic that I do not subscribe to.  As you can see, however, I have been slowly dipping my toes in the purple pool, but for the most part it's like wearing long earring - not really me.

Dachshunds

Every time I go into work, I take a deep breath and say to myself "I am not going to buy anything today" (except for on those days when I go into work and say to myself "I'm going to buy that [insert item name here] that I've been lusting after for the past month").  So I had gone into work yet again determined not to spend my money when I came across this top.  Yes, it is very similar to the vulpes vulpes top, but . . . it's my dog in T-shirt form!!! I roped said hound in to help me model.

Here's a closer shot where you can see the dogs on the shirt a little better.  The dog in my arms however is clearly done with the whole exercise and ready to be off chasing birds.
